General Manager

Melbourne in Australia, one of the most livable city in the world!

Did you know
I did not intend to have a career in Hospitality, but once I started working in hotels I liked it so much that I kept at it, and now I cannot imagine doing anything else.

I never travel without
Noise cancelling headphones, you never know when you will need to block out an unhappy child or obnoxious passenger.

Insider travel trip
The subway is always the quickest way around town.

Career Journey
My career started with Hyatt straight out of school when I joined Grand Hyatt Melbourne as a Bell Attendant. I worked there for 11 years, working my way through Front Office and Reservations finally performing the role of Front Office Manager, I transferred to Hyatt Regency Coolum as Front Office Manager for a short time before being promoted to Director of Rooms. I then embarked on my journey through Asia with Hyatt moving to open Hyatt Regency Incheon as Director of Rooms before becoming an Executive Assistant Manager. My first General Managers position was on the island of Guam at Hyatt Regency Guam, before moving to Vietnam to open Hyatt Regency Danang Resort and Spa, and then onto China to open two hotels at the same time, Park Hyatt Changbaishan and Hyatt Regency Changbaishan. Now I have moved from the North to the South of China to open the Park Hyatt Guangzhou.

Other interests
I have two major interests which complement each other. The first is eating and drinking, I enjoy travelling the world sampling the different cuisines on offer which leads me to my other passion of exercise. Various activities such as cycling, snowboarding, golf, scuba diving, and running allows me to burn off all of the wonderful calories I consume eating and drinking.

Your best travel memory
Cycling tour of France during the Tour de France, (and of course sampling the French wines in between!)

New favorite restaurant
In my line of work we get to experience some amazing food and beverage so narrowing it down to one is difficult, however the place that stands out for me is Nopi near Soho in London.

A day in the life of Anthony Gain
I make it a point to have breakfast with my wife every day. After that you never know what the day will bring. In hotels, no two days are the same.

Things I love about Park Hyatt Guangzhou
Being able to showcase the world’s newest Park Hyatt in such a dynamic city such as Guangzhou. Our Roof Bar, the Events spaces in the sky, and the unique dining environments throughout the hotel are leading the way in showing an alternative style of luxury.

How do you define “Travel”?

Travel is the experience of visiting a place that is different to my current home. I love to recommend to our guests visiting China that they get up early in the morning and watch the locals at their early morning Tai Chi. I really enjoy surprising our guests with some moment in time that they will remember and share with their family when they get home.

What is your favorite culture place to walk to from your hotel?

Guangzhou has over 2200 years of Lingnan history and holds and important place in the relatively recent past in its role in the Opium Wars when it was known as Canton. To get some perspective on the current city however you need to get some height and really understand the massive growth we are undergoing today. If you don't have much time I suggest heading to the Roof Bar which has an unsurpassed view from the top of our Hotel. If you have more time you can head to the Canton TV & Sightseeing Tower, Guangzhou’s skyscraping landmark just across the Pearl River. The observation deck is 400 meters up in the sky!

What have guests been asking about lately? What kind experience are they looking for?

Many guests ask me about the History of Guangzhou, I like to direct them to the river, the history of all major river towns can be seen from a short trip on the river. Much of Guangzhou did not exist 15 years ago, and the rapid growth of our city can be seen most clearly from a river cruise. If guests are looking for a deeper understanding of China, I will suggest that they read the excellent book 'River Town' by Peter Hessler, or 'The Opium War' by Julia Lovell, both books offer a wonderful insight into present day and historical China.

If you could learn to create one dish at the hotel restaurant, what would it be?

It would definitely be Steamed Cod (清蒸鳕鱼) by our Executive Sous Chef – Steven Zou, one of his signature dishes. This very local dish will inspire happy memories from childhood.

Is there an interesting fact about your hotel that many people don’t know?

We have a Dragon! The entrance to her cave is on the ground floor lobby, Her claw and her ball is on the 65th floor and she has a nest high above the Living Room... Shhhh, don't wake her up!

What is your favorite piece of artwork in the hotel?

On the 65th floor we have an amazing Copper Wall, I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. It is an exact copy from a real Lingnan Mansion (西关大屋)

Is there one other Park Hyatt hotel and resort in particular you love or are dying to visit?

Park Hyatt Tokyo was featured in the movie "Lost in Translation"  and is a hotel I have long wished to visit. For something a bit more adventurous Park Hyatt Changbaishan (where I worked for over two years) is set in pristine countryside, far from anywhere, with great skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.
